Knowing nothing about advertising or making ads, my friend and I were "discovered" by J. Walter Thompson execs walking by our handmade signs at the Madison, WI. liquor store we worked at. We created this campaign for JWT NYC. The first ad we ever made landed in the Phaidon "Advertising Today" book and won an Addy. We flew all over the country to party in different cities at J&B rollout events. We even started our own agency, Hayseed House, to handle the J&B account and hunt for new work.
The "Gay" J&B ad was our way of poking fun at the crassness of early marketing to the LBGT community. We forgot to tell the CD it was a joke, so he approved it, JWT bought it and it ran with positive results. The 90's were a strange time to be in advertising.
